Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb was at the ballpark Monday and confirmed the good news about his right shoulder: He won’t require surgery, and if all goes well, he’ll try to take the mound in September.
“It was all I could ask for,” Webb said of the medical merry-go-round that included five doctors and three different MRIs. “They all said there was really nothing in my shoulder that jumped out at them.”
Webb, who described his injury as a shoulder impingement, said he won’t throw a baseball for four-to-six weeks. After that, if the shoulder feels fine, he’ll begin the slow process of trying to pitch again this season.
Webb admitted that he didn’t take care of the shoulder as well as he should have in the past. He now is on a rehabilitation program that includes 30 exercises prescribed by a physical therapist who works with noted Birmingham surgeon James Andrews.
Webb’s injury has put off any additional contract talks with the Diamondbacks. The team can pick up his option for 2010 for $8.5 million.
